WHAT IS THE Yoga WALL?

Fit Columbia is proud to be one the few studios in South Carolina featuring a Yoga Wall, the ultimate prop to support and intensify any yoga practice. Based on the concept developed by BKS Iyengar, our custom made wall is a system of ropes and harnesses which securely hook into our 40 foot yoga wall, each panel withstanding over 1,000 pounds. 

Straps, ropes and slings can be attached in a variety of different ways to perform a multitude of standing, seated or suspended poses. The use of the straps, combined with gravity, allows yogis to experience a truly vertical practice (think flipping your practice by 90 degrees). This allows students to experience near-weightlessness as they explore postures in totally new ways.  

The yoga wall works by using gravity as a natural form of resistance, enabling the body to open much further than in regular yoga practice, releasing  tension from the joints. Rope poses are especially beneficial for spine health through use of traction to relieve pressure from compressed vertebral discs. Perhaps our favorite aspect of Wall Yoga is the accessibility it gives to certain poses that may seem intimidating, such as inversions. Since the installation of the yoga wall, it has made yoga more accessible for students with chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, and rheumatoid arthristis. In this way, the installation of the yoga wall aligns with the healing mission of the studio itself.

Come join us for a therapeutic and supportive practice! Wall classes fill up quickly, so register for one of the 10 spots ahead of time. Our wall teachers also offer private lessons for maximum attention and healing.

SAFETY:
Our studio has been structurally tested by a local architecture firm for stability and safety. Our riggings have been professionally installed and receive regular check ups. Our harnesses are professional quality and cycled out when worn out. Our yoga wall is designed for 1-2 optional inversions that keep you close to the wall in secured in the harness. Falls/injuries are uncommon. We are NOT a circus or acrobatics class. We encourage you to bring your own yoga mat. Each wall yoga instructor is yoga alliance certified and receive continuing education throughout the year to ensure the best experience for each of our clients. Your safety is our first priority.
